Composer Tips - Erase
Tool |
Note: Be careful when
erasing because you only have one Undo. Lots of times it pays to make a
duplicate sprite. (Click on the sprite and then click Ctrl D). If not you
have to start over. Been thar, done that thar too!
1. Stubby wanted an alligator somewhere in his header
as well. After viewing several alligator pictures from my clip art
collection he chose one. He also wanted part of the image removed. Below
is the image Stubby chose but wanted changed. The original image was
included with the Image Composer clip art. Feel free to save the
alligator_1.jpg picture (below) to a specified location. |

2. Insert the alligator_1.jpg onto your
work area by clicking Insert, From File. The Inserts an image file dialog
box appears. In this case the alligator_1.jpg file was saved to a folder
called IC_tuts, (Image Composer tutorials for short). |

3. If the alligator_1.jpg file doesn't
appear, choose All Files (*.*) from the Files of type drop down box. If
the file has indeed been saved in that folder then it should appear. |

4. With the alligator_1.jpg inserted on
your work area, next we want to make the image larger so it is easier to
erase. Click the workspace Enlarge/Reduce drop down menu, pictured below
left, and choose 300%. For this purpose that should be fine. You can
always push the 100% button at any time to bring the workspace back to
it's original size. |

5. With the alligator_1.jpg enabled and
your workspace set to 300%, click the paint brush in your tool bar, (see
below). The Paint dialog box opens. Click the eraser icon as indicated
below. |

6. Next we need to set the nib size, in
other words the size of the eraser stroke. Click the square of the second
to the smallest nib size shown as indicated in the picture displayed on
the left below. Then set the nib size to 7 by highlighting it and typing
in the number 7, or by clicking and while holding down on the mouse button
move the slide to 7. |

7. We want to remove everything but the
alligator from our image. Move your cursor over the enabled image. You
will notice the cursor turn into a paint brush with an eraser immediately
beside it. Pick a spot that you're sure you want to erase and click.
Notice a small spot erased. Erase some more space to get a feel for how
much you're erasing at once. If you're having problems controlling the
amount you're erasing, then either make your nib size smaller, and/or your
workspace larger. |

8. After you have finished erasing the image, resize it
to Width: 301 X Height: 109 pixels.
9. Keep your finished erased alligator_1 sprite on your
work area. You will need it for other Image Composer tutorials.
Tip: When you're working with a lot of sprites they
tend to get scattered around the Image Composer workspace. Using the
reduce workspace option makes the sprites easier to arrange for
manipulation purposes. See Arranging Sprites.
Another Tip: Increasing workspace size also increases
pixel size, just as decreasing workspace diminishes pixel size. |
